I know this is the one topic I get asked about all the time. What are the top foods that make you look younger? Well, I’m here to share with you my top picks and why I recommend them.

First, though, I want to address the meat of the topic briefly, and you will find other information about this subject here on this website. It’s inflammation. I know you’ve heard of it, and if you have any chronic condition or disease, you are well-acquainted with it. It is the cause of just about every problem you can have with your body and health and the signs of aging are attributable to inflammation as well.

Inflammation is a response from the body to an injury or an infection. Inflammation is a necessary response and your immune system’s way of coming to the rescue. That is acute inflammation, and you have probably experienced this if you have every had a cut or scrape. Chronic inflammation is the culprit I’m talking about in this article. Chronic inflammation is the body’s response to toxins, like smoke, or excess fat in the body, which your body sees as dangerous and foreign as well as the huge array of hazardous foods that cause damage to your body’s cells.

You have to understand your body is a well-oiled machine, and without the proper fuel (good, clean fuel), it can get gummed up with inflammation, and then the trouble begins, and so do the signs of aging!

What does food have to do with it?

If you really and truly want to look younger, you have got to give those needy cells of yours the opportunity to renew and rejuvenate, and that is where nutrition, the things you put into your mouth, really matter.  They are the fountain of youth, and coupled with sufficient water consumption, will provide you results beyond your wildest imagination!  I will say it again, only in smaller print this time, and to read more on this subject, I’ve made my favorite saying a clickable link:           FOOD IS EITHER POISON OR MEDICINE

BEST FOOD #1 – Coconut

That’s right – Coconut! Coconut is a SUPER FOOD! It is packed with nutrition, but it’s what it does for your body that makes it super! It raises your good cholesterol, it’s packed with nutrients, it helps with a myriad of conditions and diseases, and I could write an entire article on it alone.

The great news is there are a lot of ways you can get a dose of coconut every day, which I highly recommend. Coconut comes in many forms, so even if you don’t like coconut, don’t worry, you can get a dose of it easily.

Coconut oil is one way to get your dose daily. You will see a positive change in your hair, your skin, your energy levels and your mental clarity. You can blend coconut oil into smoothies, you can cook with it, or blend it into anything. It’s a wonderful option for cooking because it’s actually good for you!

Coconut milk and coconut water are also great ways to get your daily dose. I blend it into my smoothies, which I recommend as a way to get a lot of nutrition in a tasty and easy way. You can use the milk in your coffee, mix the coconut water with juice or flavored seltzer for a refreshing drink, or use it wherever you would use water.

BEST FOOD #2 – CHIA SEEDS

I bet you didn’t expect this one, did you? Chia seeds are amazing, and if you are looking for the top foods that make you look younger, you need to get a big jar of chia seeds and add them to your daily diet.

Chia seeds were used by the ancient Aztecs, and they were only given to the top athletes and soldiers of the time period. Chia seeds are another SUPER FOOD. The benefits of these tiny gems ranges from system hydration to providing a wealth of omega-3’s, and if you want beautiful skin, hair, and if you want to ward off depression, lower your blood pressure and get a lot of protein, then gobble up those seeds!  For best results, consume at least one tablespoon daily!

So how do you consume chia seeds? You probably don’t want to just eat them. They are crunchy when right from the jar. My favorite method of daily consumption is to put them into things. They soften and actually gel up like pudding when you add water. If you want a double whammy of nutrition, try adding a tablespoon of chia seeds to a cup of coconut milk, sweeten with whatever you like and let it sit in the fridge overnight. Chia pudding! Delicious!

Another idea is to add chia seeds to any smoothie. I make a whole pitcher of smoothie and I usually add two tablespoons of chia seeds to the blender. You can’t even taste them at all, they blend right in with everything else.

Throw them in soups, stews and sauces.  Just one tablespoon for a batch, however, as the chia seeds will thicken the broth.  Experiment!

BEST FOOD #3 – Dark Leafy Greens

There are so many easy ways to get these dark leafy greens, even if you don’t particularly care them.

My favorite greens for nutrition super powers are: kale, spinach, arugula, dandelion greens, and chard. These foods are powerhouses of nutrition, but you always want to get them in organic form when available. I can always find spinach, kale and arugula in the organic area, but I usually have a hard time finding organic dandelion greens or chard.  Grow them at home!

I discussed briefly the chronic inflammation problem that almost everyone is experiencing in some form. The great news is that these dark leafy greens actually fight inflammation in the blood which is going to go a long way in fighting diseases and conditions caused by inflammation (all of them). They are an amazing defense for your heart as well, so now it comes down to eating them.

I know I keep saying it, but I would suggest throwing them into your smoothies. I put strawberries and blueberries, pineapple, mango and other various fruits I have on hand. Then I add my one to two tablespoons of chia seeds and a big mound of greens. When you blend them into the smoothie, it will give the drink a bright green look, but the sweetness of the smoothie disguises the flavor of the greens. Test out your recipe until you find the exact amount to put into your smoothie for your taste.

Another idea is to finely chop the greens and simmer them in soups, stews and sauces. If you enjoy salad, supplement your lettuce with some of the greens I’ve mentioned. They will not only be delicious, but they will make your salad much more interesting.

This article does not contain a full list of recommended foods for the youthful new you.  I will get more in-depth in other articles.  I do highly recommend also these foods in large quantities weekly:  carrots, sweet potatoes, and on a daily basis: nuts! The best varieties of nuts for the biggest youth-promoting bang are almonds and walnuts. You should ideally have a small handful of each daily. Please avoid peanuts, as they are not at all good for you.

Take an action step today. Pick just one of the foods I’ve listed and implement a plan to incorporate that one food into your diet daily. If you do the chia seeds with smoothie, you’ll get the benefit of the fruits you add and the coconut milk base as well. It’s a win-win for you!
